My Retirement Years
My husband and I lived in a historic home which was over 100 years old in a historic town. Being a “history person” this was the type of house my husband wanted to live in. It was a two story house with a pull down ladder to the attic. We were told the attic was were the servants lived. I was not sure that was true but the attic would function as my husband's war and Indian artifacts museum. He often said he had a larger collection in our attic than most museums possessed. He dealt, bought and sold relics, as one of his side jobs. But the treasures he found went into his collection.
The neatest thing about that home was it was in walking distance of the town and schools. I could walk to the post office, grocery stores, pharmacies and most anywhere I needed to go. We also lived a block from the schools. My husband and I walked to school together to the corner where he continued to the high school and I went into the elementary school. Neighbors commented that they loved watching our daughter skip to school in the morning.
One day shortly after I retired we got a knock on the door and a man asked if we wanted to sell our home. Our house was not up for sale and I just said, “No!” and I closed the door. I do not remember how many times he came back and asked the…
