I often read articles about the many uses of common items that I never heard of before.

I have read to always have a supply of paper coffee filters in your car and your kitchen for multiple uses. I read the article and then never try the new uses. I usually forget the innovative ideas quickly. I use coffee filters when brewing coffee exclusively. Even after reading another article today about the usefulness of coffee filters, I will not use them for anything new, just for brewing coffee.

I looked up the history of paper coffee filters.

A German homemaker, Melitta Bentz, was frustrated with cloth filters, bitter coffee, and cleaning the slug off the bottom of her coffee pot. She invented a solution.

Often frustration brings about new inventions. In 1908 she grabbed a paper from her child’s notebook and used the paper as a coffee filter. She and her husband patented her invention, went into business together, and Melitta coffee filters are still on sale today.

She wanted to take the bitter taste out of her cup of coffee and her filter worked. It removed the bitter taste and reduced…
