So, What Is This?

Epiphany, Three King Day, is coming soon. Three King Day is when the three or however many wisemen arrive to find the King of the Jews. I wonder if they exclaimed, “So, what is this?”
They had followed a star. Stopped and asked a reigning King where to find the new king and finally arrived to find a baby of a poor family. Where they surprised? They brought presents for a king. Did they expect to see an infant King born to a lowly family? “So, what is this?” They traveled so far to honor a new born King not born in a palace? They followed the star they saw in the East.
They gave their gifts, homage, to God’s humble Son. Did they wonder if their gifts of Frankincense, Gold, and Myrrh placed before the Christ Child was truly giving gifts to the King of all Kings, God’s Son?
How many times I have sung the Carol, “We Three Kings”, and reflected on its meaning. They were not kings of Israel but Kings from the Orient. Why? How far did they come, how long did it take them, did they think, “So, What Is This?” Was the star difficult to follow? Did they think they understood God’s words revealed correctly?
“After they heard the King, they went on their way, and the star they had seen when it rose went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the child was. When they saw the star, they were overjoyed. On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh.” Matthew 2:9–11.
In the Holy Bible there are two epiphany moments called The Epiphany. The first is in the story of the three wise kings, or Magi who see a heavenly star and follow it to the new born King. It is revealed to them that this baby is the Christ Child, that this child is the King, God’s Son.
January 6, 2022 is known as Epiphany, Theophany or Three Kings Day which is a Christian feast day that celebrates a revelation. The word epiphany means a revelation. God revealed the fact that His Son is Jesus Christ, who is a human. Jesus is fully God, God’s Son, and fully human, Mary and stepfather, Joseph’s son.
“So, What Is This?”
It is a miracle!
Dear Father, thank you for the gift of Your Son! The Magi were privileged to have God reveal to them that His Son was human. A human being that could relate in every way with the ones He came to save. A miracle from our Awesome God. Amen.
