“Wives, submit to your husbands as to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior. Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything. Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church…husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies…and a wife must respect her husband.”

Ephesians 5:22–33

Adam was responsible for his actions even though he blamed Eve. We are all accountable to God for our actions as well. Eve blamed the serpent, but she alone was responsible. The serpent was punished as the third sinner for He was disloyal to God. All sin is punishable by death. Sin corrupted the original relationship God had planned for husbands and wives. Only God’s perfect sacrifice of His Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, would be enough to wash away our and the first couple sins.

Using the Knowing-Jesus website I learned more about the punishments Eve received. Eve received three punishments; 1) great pain in childbirth 2) a desire for her husband and 3) that her husband would rule over her. Number 1, the punishment of great pain in childbirth is easy to understand, but 2 and 3 punishments seem puzzling. The New Living Translation translates this as “you will desire to control your husband, but he will…
