Unfortunately the evangelical Christian is being painted with a broad brush here on Medium. Pious Christians have also suffered from stereotypes in movies and the like. I am sorry to hear of your experience in a non-Christian “Christian” church. I hope you can find a family and a home somewhere where you can follow Jesus. Not all Christians hate.
