What Does The Alpha and the Omega Mean?

“I am the Alpha and the Omega, ” says the Lord God, “who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty.” Revelation 1:8

Alpha and Omega are the first and last letters of the Greek alphabet. Who or what is first and who or what is last is demonstrated by groups in the animal kingdom. Watching several groups of animals that live together, it becomes obvious who is the alpha male or female and the hierarchies of all the members of that group. Each member knows their place or role. Who gets to eat first and who is the dominant member of the group is easily observed. A leader emerges from a group usually for the safety of the group in the wild. A pride of lions has a leader and hierarchies of all the members of the pride. A gang of wolves has an alpha wolf in charge of the pack. Even pets that live together have a leader or alpha member of their group who is dominant. Social order is important in the animal world.

I sit and watch the interactions of six horses on my son’s horse farm. There are two mini horses and four large horses. One of the large horses, Cherokee, is a huge stallion. But he is not the Alpha. Of the four large horses, one is a female. She, Honey, is the Alpha of the group. She gets to eat…
